Poole Quay

The working waterfront: boats to Brownsea, the lifting bridge, seafood terraces and most of Poole's summer calendar.

Poole Quay is where the town started and where it still gathers. It is a working waterfront rather than a restored one: commercial boats, fishing craft and the cross-harbour ferries use it alongside the restaurants.

What is here

Boats to Brownsea Island and round the harbour leave from the Quay. Poole Museum sits on it, free, with the Iron Age logboat inside. The lifting bridge opens on a schedule to let masts through, and the Twin Sails Bridge crosses to Hamworthy.

Eating and drinking

Waterside terraces run most of its length, with seafood the obvious order given the boats landing a few metres away. See restaurants and pubs and bars.

Behind it

The Old Town runs straight back from the water, and the Cockle Trail links its historic buildings on a free marked route.

When to come

Summer evenings are the busiest and the best. Out of season the Quay is quiet, and the harbour is arguably better for it.

Common questions

Poole Quay your questions answered

What is Poole Quay?

The historic working waterfront of Poole, running along the harbour at the foot of the Old Town. It is where the boats to Brownsea Island leave from, where Poole Museum sits, and where most of the town's summer events happen.

Is Poole Quay worth visiting?

Yes. It is the centre of the town's life and the natural starting point for a visit: the boats, the museum, the Old Town behind it and the waterside restaurants are all within a few hundred metres.

Can you park on Poole Quay?

There is pay-and-display parking on and near the Quay, which fills quickly on event days and summer weekends. Town centre car parks a short walk away are often the easier option.

What events happen on Poole Quay?

The Quay carries much of Poole's summer programme, along with the Christmas Maritime Light Trail later in the year. Check what's on for current dates.
