Poole Beaches Guide

Every beach from the harbour mouth west to Branksome, with facilities, parking, dogs and what each one is actually like.

Poole's beaches divide into two kinds: the open bay beaches facing south, and the harbour shore facing in. They suit different days.

Sandbanks

The famous one, on the spit at the harbour mouth. Wide sand, lifeguards in season, full facilities, and the busiest of the lot. Car parks fill by mid-morning on hot days. See Sandbanks.

Shore Road

The stretch running west from Sandbanks along the bay, with beach huts, parking and an easier approach than the peninsula itself.

Canford Cliffs and Branksome Chine

Reached through wooded valleys cut down the cliff, which gives them shade, shelter and slightly fewer people. See Canford Cliffs.

Branksome Dene

Further east again, and usually the quietest of the bay beaches, with year-round dog access on parts of it.

Hamworthy Park

On the harbour side, so the water is shallow and calm rather than open sea. Grass, a playground and a paddling area behind the sand. Best for small children. See Hamworthy.

Read beach safety before you swim, and see beach hut hire.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many beaches are there in Poole?

Poole has a continuous run of sand on the bay side from Sandbanks west to Branksome Chine, usually described as separate beaches by their access points, plus the harbour-side beach at Hamworthy Park.

Which Poole beach is quietest?

Branksome Dene and the far ends of Branksome Chine are usually the quietest on the bay side, because the walk down through the chine filters out some of the crowd. Hamworthy is quieter again, being on the harbour.

Do Poole beaches have lifeguards?

RNLI lifeguards patrol the main bathing beaches during the season, typically from late spring to early autumn. Swim between the red and yellow flags where they are flying.

Are there toilets and cafes at Poole beaches?

The main access points at Sandbanks, Shore Road, Canford Cliffs and Branksome Chine have facilities including toilets and seasonal cafes. Provision is thinner at quieter stretches and outside the main season.
