Boat Tours in Poole

Brownsea Island crossings, round-the-harbour cruises and coastal runs west to Old Harry Rocks and the Jurassic Coast.

Poole is a harbour town, and the boat trips are not a sideshow: they are the best way to understand the place.

To the island

Brownsea Island is about twenty minutes from the Quay, or a shorter hop from Sandbanks. Book ahead in summer.

Round the harbour

Cruises circle the harbour and its smaller islands, which is the only way to see how large and how shallow it really is. Good for wildlife, particularly out of season.

Along the coast

Longer trips run out through the harbour mouth and west to Old Harry Rocks, the chalk stacks marking the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast. Seen from sea level they are something else entirely.

The working crossing

The chain ferry runs year-round across the harbour entrance to Studland, four minutes, taking cars, bikes and walkers.

Services are weather dependent. See tours and sightseeing and the harbour guide.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What boat trips leave from Poole Quay?

Services to Brownsea Island, cruises around the harbour and its islands, and longer coastal trips west past Old Harry Rocks towards the Jurassic Coast. Timetables are seasonal and weather dependent.

How much is the boat to Brownsea Island?

A boat fare applies, and landing on the island is separately charged unless you are a National Trust member. Check current prices with the boat operator and the National Trust before travelling.

Do boat trips from Poole run in winter?

Most leisure services are seasonal, running from spring to autumn, with reduced or no sailings in winter. The Sandbanks chain ferry operates year round.

Can you see Old Harry Rocks by boat from Poole?

Yes. Coastal trips run west from Poole out past the harbour mouth to Old Harry Rocks, the chalk stacks at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast, which are far more impressive from the water than from the clifftop.
