Getting Around Poole

Buses, boats, bikes and feet: how to move between the Quay, the Old Town, the beaches and the island without a car.

Poole divides into a walkable centre and a string of beaches three miles away, and the trick is knowing which to walk and which to ride.

On foot

The station, the High Street, the Old Town and the Quay are all within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. The Cockle Trail links the historic buildings on a marked route through the Old Town, free and self-guided.

By bus

Buses connect the town centre and Quay to Canford Cliffs, Branksome and Sandbanks. In high summer this is genuinely faster than driving once you count the time spent looking for a space.

By boat

Boats run from the Quay to Brownsea Island and round the harbour. The chain ferry crosses the harbour mouth to Studland in four minutes and takes cars, bikes and walkers.

By bike

The land around the harbour is flat and the shoreline paths run for miles. See cycling in Poole for routes.

By car

If you must drive, read car parking first.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Poole walkable?

The centre is. The railway station, the Dolphin Centre, the High Street, the Old Town and the Quay form a continuous walk of about fifteen minutes end to end. The beaches are a different matter, around three miles from the Quay.

How do you get from Poole to Brownsea Island?

By boat from Poole Quay, roughly twenty minutes, or by the shorter crossing from Sandbanks. Services run through the main season and are weather dependent.

Is there a bus from Poole to the beaches?

Yes, buses run from the town centre and Quay out to Canford Cliffs, Branksome and Sandbanks. On a hot day the bus usually beats driving, because the beach car parks fill by mid-morning.

Can you cycle around Poole Harbour?

Yes. The ground is flat, there are traffic-free stretches along the shoreline and through the parks, and the chain ferry takes bikes across to the Purbeck lanes.
