Poole Beaches

Blue Flag sand from Sandbanks round to Branksome Chine, with the quieter chines, the harbour shore and what each beach is actually good for.

Poole's beaches run in a line from the harbour mouth westward along Poole Bay, and then continue as harbour shoreline on the other side of the peninsula. They are two quite different experiences.

The bay beaches

Sandbanks sits on the spit guarding the harbour entrance and is the most popular: wide, clean sand, lifeguards in season, and everything you need within a short walk. Shore Road runs along behind it. Further west, Canford Cliffs and Branksome Chine reach the sand through wooded valleys cut into the cliff, which keeps them quieter and gives them shade.

The harbour shore

Hamworthy Park, on the western side, faces into the harbour rather than the open sea. The water is shallower and calmer, which suits small children, and there is grass and a playground behind the sand.

Before you go

Read the beach safety notes on flags, tides and the harbour mouth, and the full Poole beaches guide for facilities beach by beach. Beach hut hire is worth considering outside high summer.

Common questions

Poole Beaches questions

Which is the best beach in Poole?

Sandbanks is the best known and the best equipped, with wide sand, lifeguards in season and the full run of facilities. For a quieter day, Branksome Chine and Branksome Dene have the same sand with a wooded valley behind them and fewer people on it.

Are Poole's beaches Blue Flag?

Several of Poole's beaches have held Blue Flag status, which covers water quality, safety, facilities and environmental management. Awards are reviewed annually, so check the current year's list before you rely on it.

Can you take dogs on Poole beaches?

Some stretches allow dogs all year and others carry restrictions through the main bathing season, roughly May to September. Parts of Branksome Dene and Hamworthy Park are the usual year-round options. Always read the signs at the beach entrance, as the boundaries move.

Where can you park for Sandbanks beach?

There are pay-and-display car parks along the peninsula, and they fill early on hot days. Arriving before mid-morning, or coming by bus or on foot from Canford Cliffs, saves a long circuit of the roads.

Is the sea safe for swimming at Poole?

The beaches facing Poole Bay shelve gently and are patrolled by RNLI lifeguards in season. The harbour mouth at Sandbanks is a different matter: tidal flow through the gap is strong, and it is not a place to swim across. Stick to the patrolled areas.
