Restaurants in Poole

From quayside seafood and harbour-view terraces to the independent kitchens of Ashley Cross and Canford Cliffs.

Poole's restaurants fall into three rough groups, and knowing which you want saves a wasted evening.

On the water

The Quay is the postcard version: terraces, masts, the lifting bridge, and seafood that has not travelled far. It is busy, it is seasonal, and the view is genuinely worth it on a clear evening.

In the villages

Ashley Cross is the one locals name first, a green ringed with independent kitchens covering most of the obvious cuisines and several less obvious ones. Canford Cliffs is quieter and smarter, handy if you are staying near the beaches.

In the Old Town

The lanes behind the Quay hold the smaller rooms, where the menu is short because one person is cooking it.

Use the filters below to narrow by cuisine, area and what matters to you, or see pubs and bars, cafes and delis and vegetarian and vegan.

Common questions

Restaurants in Poole questions

What food is Poole known for?

Seafood, and shellfish in particular. Poole is a working fishing port, and the harbour has long been associated with oysters, clams, scallops and crab. Several Quay restaurants build their menus around the day's landing.

Do you need to book restaurants in Poole?

In summer, at weekends and through school holidays, yes, especially for a table with a harbour view. Out of season you can usually walk in, though the better-known kitchens still fill on Friday and Saturday.

Where can you eat outside in Poole?

The Quay has the largest run of waterside terraces. Ashley Cross has tables out around the green, and several pubs on the harbour shore have gardens facing the water.

Where to stay in Poole

Sandbanks hotels, harbourside flats a street back from the Quay and the quieter beds out at Hamworthy and Broadstone, with the areas each one suits.
