Corfe Castle stands in a natural gap in the Purbeck chalk ridge, which is exactly why it was built there and why it looks the way it does.
The castle
A National Trust property, slighted after a Civil War siege, so what remains are dramatic fragments rather than a complete building. The setting does most of the work.
The village and the railway
The village below has pubs and tea rooms, and the Swanage Railway runs steam trains through it.
Getting there from Poole
Take the chain ferry from Sandbanks and drive on, or go the long way round through Wareham. See Dorset and countryside.
