Things to Do in Poole

An island with red squirrels, three miles of Blue Flag sand, a Georgian quay and a harbour you can sail, paddle or simply sit beside.

Poole is a working harbour that happens to have three miles of Blue Flag sand attached to it, and that combination is what makes it different from the resort towns along this coast. You can spend a morning among Georgian merchant houses, catch a boat to an island with red squirrels on it, and be swimming off Sandbanks by mid-afternoon.

Start with the water

Poole Harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world and the reason everything else here exists. It is shallow, sheltered and almost entirely enclosed, which is why it has become one of the best places in Britain to learn to sail, windsurf or paddleboard. If you would rather someone else did the work, the boat trips from the Quay run to Brownsea Island, round the harbour and out along the coast.

Then the island

Brownsea Island sits in the middle of the harbour, twenty minutes by boat from the Quay. It is National Trust land, home to one of southern England's last red squirrel populations, and the place Baden-Powell held the 1907 camp that started Scouting. Peacocks wander the paths. The lagoon draws waders by the thousand in winter.

And the town behind it

The Old Town is the part people miss. Georgian and Tudor merchant buildings run back from the water, the Guildhall and Scaplen's Court among them, and the Cockle Trail links them in a free self-guided walk. Poole Museum on the Quay holds the Iron Age logboat pulled from the harbour mud.

Common questions

Things to Do in Poole questions

What are the top things to do in Poole?

Most visits start with Poole Quay and the Old Town, then take the boat to Brownsea Island for the red squirrels and the Scouting history. Add a Blue Flag beach at Sandbanks, the gardens at Compton Acres, the boating lake at Poole Park, and Poole Museum for the Iron Age logboat and the town's maritime story.

What is there to do in Poole when it rains?

Poole Museum is free and covers several floors, Lighthouse puts on theatre, film and music all year, and the Old Town's pubs and the Dolphin Centre keep you dry. Compton Acres has a tea room, and an afternoon of harbourside seafood is no worse in the rain.

Is Poole good for a day trip?

Yes. The train from London Waterloo takes around two hours and the station is a ten-minute walk from the Quay, so a day trip works without a car. A single day comfortably covers the Quay, the Old Town, Poole Park and either Brownsea Island or a beach.

What can you do in Poole for free?

Poole Park, Upton Country Park, Hamworthy Park and all the beaches are free, as is Poole Museum. The Cockle Trail through the Old Town is a free self-guided walk, and watching the lifting bridge open costs nothing at all.

How long do you need in Poole?

Two to three days covers the Quay, the Old Town, a beach and Brownsea Island without rushing. Four or five lets you add Studland and the chain ferry, Corfe Castle, the Jurassic Coast and a day on the water.
